The serine proteinase inhibitors (serpins) compose a superfamily of proteins with a diverse set of functions, including the control of blood coagulation, complement activation, programmed cell death and development. Serpins are secreted glycoproteins that contain a stretch of peptide that mimics a true substrate for a corresponding serine protease. SerpinB11 (serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade B (ovalbumin), member 11), also known as EPIPIN or SERPIN11, is a 392 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that belongs to the Ov-serpin subfamily and serpin family. Like other members of the serpin family, SerpinB11 has been identified as a noninhibitory intracellular protein. The gene encoding SerpinB11 maps to human chromosome 18, which houses over 300 protein-coding genes and contains nearly 76 million bases. There are a variety of diseases associated with defects in chromosome 18-localized genes, some of which include Trisomy 18 (also known as Edwards syndrome), Niemann-Pick disease, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, erythropoietic protoporphyria and follicular lymphomas.

CD8 is a cell surface receptor expressed either as a heterodimer with the CD8 β chain (CD8 α/β) or as a homodimer (CD8 α/α). A majority of thymocytes and a subpopulation of mature T cells and NK cells express CD8a. CD8 binds to MHC class 1 and through its association with protein tyrosine kinase p56lck plays a role in T cell development and activation of mature T cells. For mature T-cells, CD4 and CD8 are mutually exclusive, so anti-CD8, generally used in conjunction with anti-CD4. It is a useful marker for distinguishing helper/inducer T-lymphocytes, and most peripheral T-cell lymphomas are CD4 /CD8-. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma is usually CD4 and CD8-, and in T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia, CD4 and CD8 are often co-expressed. CD8 is also found in littoral cell angioma of the spleen.

CARKD is a 347 amino acid protein that belongs to the YjeF family and exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms. Containing one YjeF C-terminal domain, CARKD is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 13q34. Chromosome 13 contains around 114 million base pairs and 400 genes. Key tumor suppressor genes on chromosome 13 include the breast cancer susceptibility gene, BRCA2, and the RB1 (retinoblastoma) gene. RB1 encodes a crucial tumor suppressor protein which, when defective, leads to malignant growth in the retina and has been implicated in a variety of other cancers. The gene SLITRK1, which is associated with Tourette syndrome, is on chromosome 13. As with most chromosomes, polysomy of part or all of chromosome 13 is deleterious to development and decreases the odds of survival. Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is quite deadly and the few who survive past one year suffer from permanent neurologic defects, difficulty eating and vulnerability to serious respiratory infections.

The low affinity NGFR (Nerve growth factor receptor) is a 75kDa membrane-spanning glycoprotein lacking intrinsic tyrosine kinase activity. p75NGFR interacts with TrkA, the high affinity NGF receptor and potentiates TrkA signaling at low NGF concentrations. The p75 receptor binds nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, neurotrophin-3 and neurotrophin-4 with varying specificities. The p75NGFR plays an important role in neurotrophic factor signaling and has been shown to modulate the susceptibility of selective cellular populations to programmed cell death. It is expressed on many neuronal cells types including many embryonic forms and the receptor can be used to isolate neuronal progenitor cells. NGF is important for the development, differentiation and survival of a variety of neuronal and non-neuronal cells. Its action is mediated by binding to two distinct receptors, the high affinity p140 and low affinity p75. p75NGFR binds neurotrophins including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), NT-4/5, and NT-6. p75NGFR belongs to the TNF-R superfamily and is reported to mediate NGF-induced apoptosis.

IGSF11 is also known as BTIGSF (brain and testis-specific immunoglobulin superfamily protein) or VSIG3 (V-set and immunoglobulin domain-containing protein 3) and is a 431 amino acid protein that is expressed as three isoforms. IGSF11 is highly expressed in testis and ovary and is also expressed in brain, kidney and skeletal muscle, localized to the cellular membrane as a single-pass membrane protein. IGSF11 is an immunoglobulin with V-type and C2-type domains that function in molecular recognition. When IGSF11 is in the trans position, it plays an important role in cell-cell adhesion via both homophilic and heterophilic interactions with other molecules. These cell–cell interactions are also thought to be important for neuronal cell interactions, such as neuron–neuron or neuron–glia interactions, which are important for the development and function of the central nervous system. In addition, IGSF11 might also be involved interactions between Sertoli cells and spermatocytes, which are important associations during spermatogenesis. The IGSF11 gene is commonly upregulated in gastric cancer and IGSF11 is highly expressed in many types of human tumors, indicating that it may be useful as a target for immunotherapy.
