The beta lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins) are the most frequently used antimicrobial agents. All of the beta lactams are structurally related through the presence of a core beta lactam ring. Bacterial resistance to beta lactams continues to increase, primarily due to the production of beta lactamases. Beta lactamases catalyze the hydrolysis of the beta lactam bond, which destroys antibacterial activity. Bacteria that produce TEM type or SHV type beta lactamases have point mutations in structural genes that have extended the substrate specificity of these beta lactamases. As a result, many of the beta lactamase producing Gram negative pathogens have become multidrug resistant.

LRRTM3 Antibody: The Leucine-rich repeat transmembrane neuronal proteins (LRRTMs) are differentially expressed in the nervous system and were recently found to instruct presynaptic and mediate postsynaptic glutamatergic differentiation, with LRRTM1 and LRRTM2 most potent at inducing presynaptic differentiation. Recent evidence suggests that LRRTM3 promotes the processing of amyloid-precursor protein (APP) by the beta-secretase BACE, leading to the proteolytic production of the Abeta42 peptide that is the main component of amyloid plaques. Furthermore, LRRTM3 maps to a region of chromosome 10 linked to both late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and elevated plasma Abeta42 levels, suggesting that LRRTM3 is a functional and positional candidate gene for AD.

Chk2 Antibody: The p53 tumor-suppressor gene integrates numerous signals that control cell life and death. Several novel molecules involved in p53 signaling, including Chk2, p53R2, p53AIP1, Noxa, PIDD, and PID/MTA2, were recently discovered. The checkpoint kinase Chk2 is the mammalian homologue of yeast Cds1/Rad53. In response to DNA damage, the checkpoint kinase ATM phosphorylates and activates Chk2, which in turn directly phosphorylates and activates p53. Chk2 serves as ATM downstream effector to mediate activation of p53. Chk2 also phosphorylates and activates BRCA1, the product of a tumor suppressor gene that is mutated in breast and ovarian cancer.

Gle1 is an essential mRNA export factor in both human and yeast cells. It associates with the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through hCG1 and NUP155 in mammalian cells and in conjunction with inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6), stimulates Dbp5, a member of the DEAD-box helicase family, triggering mRNP remodeling and facilitating RNA export from the nucleus. Recent evidence suggests that mutations in Gle1 causing defects in mRNA export can result in human disease. At least three isoforms of Gle1 are known to exist.

Serum Amyloid A1 Protein (SAA1) is an acute phase apolipoprotein reactant that is produced predominantly by hepatocytes and is under the regulation of inflammatory cytokines. SAA is produced mainly in the liver and circulates in low levels in the blood. SAA may play a role in the immune system and facilitate the repair of injured tissues, it also acts as an antibacterial agent, and signals the migration of germ-fighting cells to sites of infection. SAA also functions as an apolipoprotein of the HDL complex. The SAA cleavage product designated amyloid protein A is deposited systemically as amyloid in vital organs such as the liver, spleen, and kidneys in chronic inflammatory diseases patients. These deposits are extremely insoluble and resistant to proteolysis; they disrupt tissue structure and compromise performance.

Alternative splicing, resulting in transcript variants encoding different isoforms, (including the flip and flop isoforms that vary in their signal transduction properties), has been noted for this gene.

p107 is a tumor suppressor protein that appears to be involved in cell cycle regulation, as it is phosphorylated in the S to M phase transition and is dephosphorylated in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Both the RB1 protein and the product of this gene can form a complex with adenovirus E1A protein and SV40 large T-antigen, with the SV40 large T-antigen binding only to the unphosphorylated form of each protein. In addition, both proteins can inhibit the transcription of cell cycle genes containing E2F binding sites in their promoters. Due to the sequence and biochemical similarities with the RB1 protein, it is thought that the protein encoded by this gene may also be a tumor suppressor. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

The Olfactomedin family comprises a diverse group of secreted glycoproteins, which includes OLFM1 (Noelin-1), OLFM2 (Noelin-2), OLFM3 (Noelin-3), OLFM4 (Noelin-4), tiarin, pancortin, gliomedin and mycocilin. These proteins are implicated in the development of the nervous system. Specifically, OLFM1 and OLFM2 expression is observed in the neural plate and neural crest, as well as in the cranial ganglia in mouse at E8-10, and later in brain tissue and in the zone of polarizing activity in the limb. Overexpression of OLFM1 causes an excess of neural crest emigrations and prolonged neural crest production. OLFM2 participates in the regulation of the development of the anterior nervous system. An Arg144Gln mutation in OLFM2 has been implicated as a possible cause for open-angle glaucoma (OAG).
