IL-23 is a proinflammatory heterodimeric protein composed of two subunits, a unique p19 subunit and a p40 subunit, which is shared with IL-12. IL-23 is secreted by activated dendritic cells and macrophages, and signals though a receptor comprised of IL-23R complexed with IL-12Rβ2. IL-23 has been shown to enhance proliferation of memory T cells. It also stimulates the production of IFN-gamma in NK cells, induces IL-17 production, and drives Th17 mediated responses. The protein encoded by this gene was initially named CA-related protein because of sequence similarity to other known carbonic anhydrase genes. However, the gene product lacks carbonic anhydrase activity (i.e., the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide). The gene product continues to carry a carbonic anhydrase designation based on clear sequence identity to other members of the carbonic anhydrase gene family. The absence of CA8 gene transcription in the cerebellum of the lurcher mutant in mice with a neurologic defect suggests an important role for this acatalytic form.
