The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer simple epithelium in proximity to the outer surface of the retinal photoreceptor cells. Retinal pigment epithelium-specific protein (RPE65) is a 65 kDa protein belonging to the β-carotene dioxygenase family. This protein is important in 11-cis retinal production as well as in visual pigment regeneration. RPE65 is attached to the membrane by a lipid anchor when palmitoylated (membrane form) and soluble when unpalmitoylated. The soluble form of the protein binds vitamin A. Defects in RPE65 causes autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa and/or Leber congenital amaurosis type 2.

Interleukin-18-binding protein (IL18BP) is also known as Tadekinig-alfa, IL18BPa, which functions as an IL18 inhibitor. IL18BP is a secreted protein which contains one Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin-like) domain. IL18BP does not have a transmembrane domain and hence is not anchored to the cell membrane. IL18BP is strongly expressed in heart, lung, placenta and spleen. Isoform A of IL18BP binds to IL-18 and inhibits its activity. IL18BP also functions as an inhibitor of the early TH1 cytokine response. IL18BP suppresses the production of IFN-gamma resulting in reduced T-helper type 1 immune responses.

Skin and dendritic cells are targets of the IL-36 interleukins leading to a Th1 response. Tau proteins are proteins which contain four Tau/MAP repeats. They promote microtubule assembly and stability, and might be involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal polarity. They are abundant in neurons of the central nervous system and are less common elsewhere, but are also expressed at very low levels in CNS astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. The tau proteins are the product of alternative splicing from a single gene that in humans is designated MAPT. When tau proteins are defective, and no longer stabilize microtubules properly, they can result in several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Pick's disease, frontotemporal dementia, cortico-basal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy.
